On June 24th, Teach For America Greater Philadelphia-Camden welcomed its 2008 corps of teachers to the region with a dinner and program featuring writer/producer M. Night Shyamalan as keynote speaker. The 2008 corps joins 2007 Teach For America corps members totaling over 320 teachers in the region and 500 alumni of the program in the Greater Philadelphia community. The dinner, attended by over 300 new and returning corps members and supporters of Teach For America, welcomed the newest members of the program to the region and was focused on inspiring them to change the life prospects for young people in the community they will call home for at least the next two years.
“Night’s Speech set the tone for our work by inspiring corps members to believe that real change is possible in our community and that good teaching is one of the keys to making it happen,” said Teach For America Executive Director, Mike Wang. “Our corps members left the dinner excited about what the next two years will bring and ready to become leaders in this community.” Shyamalan, who supports the work of Teach For America and who guest taught in a high school English classroom during Teach For America Week, is helping focus the efforts of his family’s foundation on creating healthier education systems that better serve all students in the Philadelphia region.
